Raspberry Sassafras thinks the book she’s reading today is just out of this world. Literally! Ollie Discovers the Planets, written by Anya Acres and illustrated by Megan Elizabeth, tells the story of an adventurous little alien, Ollie, who is both inquisitive and fearless. He lives with his mum and dad on a little planet, just left of the twinkling winking star. Ollie wanted an adventure, and as he looked up at the beautiful shimmering stars, he decided that he wanted to explore the biggest and brightest star of them all. It was called the sun, and it sparkled, it shimmered and it shone.
The book is aimed at three to eight-year-olds and is designed to aid children’s understanding of non-fiction topics, whilst also providing elements of fun, surprise, prediction and familiarity. Questions feature on the final page, in order to aid discussion and reinforce understanding.
Ollie Discovers the Planets is currently on sale at Bo-Belles and Classic Collectables. If shops in the UK aren’t geographically convenient for you, you can also find the book on the Ollie Discovers website. And as long as you’re out there cruising about on the webbernet, don’t forget to pop into the Ollie Discovers Facebook page for a look and a Like.
Anya Acres is passionate about putting enjoyment and pleasure into reading, whatever ability or gender the child might be. She believes that literacy should be available to everyone, and the element of fun, surprises, prediction and familiarity is key.
The inspiration for the series (Ollie Discovers the Dinosaurs is next) came while teaching a class of four-year-olds. Acres noticed that she couldn’t find a topic-based story about space; they were all complicated non-fiction books, or fictional books like Aliens Love Underpants!
Last year, when she was made redundant in a teaching job she loved, she used her redundancy money for illustrator fees and printing. And voilà, her twenty-year-old, handwritten story is now a book!
